One of the challenges of a modular design is to make certain letters – in this case, the lower-case e, for example – easily readable. Gran Turismo solves this issue by using a rounded end to the horizontal stroke that suggests a looped line enclosing an invisible counter. Diagonals, another design problem for fonts with a strong horizontal emphasis, are here represented with strokes that turn up or down at their terminus. The italic is set to an urgent 18° rather than the more usual 12°. An extended version and an outline version in which the width of the line exactly matches the gap between the elements round out the family. It is reminiscent of the lettering found on supercars and summer blockbuster movies, and has been adopted by dance outfit Steps as their logo, but don’t let that put you off.
